OUR KIDS NEED YOU!
“Miss Davis believes in me. I've raised my grades and I come to school every day.
Now I believe in myself,” -- Sixth grade student about his mentor.
Mentor : Have lunch with a child once each week. Quality time in this one-on-one relationship can help students in many areas that affect life at home and at school. By offering friendship, guidance and a positive perspective, a mentor clearly shows that someone cares.
Tutor: Help a child be successful in school by tutoring them during the school day or helping them with their homework after school. All CIS sites have a great need for tutors.
Student interest group: (Lunch Bunch) You can share a talent or special interest of yours with a group of children at any of our school sites...sports, crafts, model rocketry. Or you can just talk about topics of interest to the students. Usually this is a once-a-week commitment for six weeks. Shy? Think about co-facilitating a group with a friend.
Girl Power: Motivate and inspire at-risk girls by connecting them with positive female role models. You can encourage the girls to gain confidence, to be willing to take appropriate risks, and to enjoy the rewards associated with good decision-making. You can facilitate a small girls group weekly for six weeks (materials are available). Or you can tutor, mentor, be a guest speaker or host a small group of students for a job shadow experience.
Job Shadow: Invite a small group of students to your work place and provide them the opportunity to learn about careers, marketable skills, and professional behavior. Sharing your job skills and career experience is a wonderful way to inspire a child or young adult to set future goals for themselves!
Reality Store: The Reality Store is an exercise that helps youth understand the “realities” involved in preparing for an employable future and adulthood. Each student completes a lifestyle assessment and is assigned an occupation based on his/her grade point average. Students are given a checkbook with a monthly salary to go through the Reality Store to purchase housing, transportation, child care, food, utilities, insurance, etc. Community representatives from those entities are stationed at booths in the Reality Store and volunteers are needed to assist the students with their purchases.
Supply or Clothing Drive: You can also help children and families by donating much needed miscellaneous items (backpacks, school supplies, clothing, etc). Or organize a drive at your place of business where your fellow employees can also contribute.
Guest Speaker : Visit a classroom of students to give a presentation and answer questions about careers or your topic of interest. Share your knowledge and guidance with our future work force!
Research confirms what we had previously only intuitively known. Volunteers make a difference. We now know that youth who spend time with volunteers experience a number of positive educational benefits such as better attendance; a better chance of going on to higher education; and better attitude towards school. In terms of health and safety, kids have a lesser rate of substance abuse. Socially and emotionally, kids who spend time with volunteers have more positive social attitudes and relationships. They trust their parents more and communicate better with them. They also report feeling they get more emotional support from their friends than do kids without volunteers in their lives. The unselfish contributions of volunteers are the key to success for our kids. Won't you consider spending your time with a child?
